Enlisting in 1942, Clyde was a Sergeant in the 5th Marine Division. His division was in the first wave that went ashore in the invasion of Iowa Jima. He witnessed the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. He also visited Nagasaki after the dropping of the atomic bomb, describing it to his wife Dixie as “absolutely nothing, just one vast wasteland.”
